A sheath wedding dress is a narrow, column-like silhouette that follows the body’s natural line from shoulder to hem without added flare or volume, the simplest cut in bridal wear. It differs from a mermaid gown by staying close to the leg at the knee rather than flaring out. Related terms include the column dress and the slip dress, the latter cut from lightweight fabrics such as charmeuse or bias-cut satin. The sheath is most often made in a minimalist, contemporary style.
